A while back, Jamie asked me why I don't blog much recently. I told her it's because I've been at home mostly and I haven't been doing much so I really don't have anything to write about. Feels a bit weird to say that, since in theory there'd be more time for me to blog since I'm unoccupied. But anyway, I am glad to say that today was a bit of a break from my usual routine.
Nins, Jomax and I went out to see Crazy, Stupid, Love. and it was really good. Yes it's hilarious and yes it has a gorgeous cast, but what's great is that everything works well even in the cheesiest moments. It's a light hearted movie but with notes of drama, just the right balance of both in my opinion. We all enjoyed the movie, and I mean everyone in the cinema. As if on cue, everyone would snicker (or laugh out loud) when a comical situation presents itself. Really awesome. I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Rad movie. Absolutely not your usual no brainer superhero movie. Showed a concise but coherent history of the main characters, had political tones blended well within the plot, had cool and appropriate effects, it's really good.
Of course these two make the movie worthwhile as well. Haha. I go for Magneto because he's a polyglot and his powers are were relevant to my research. Chos.

Jane Eyre (2011)
Among the classic English romance novels written before the twentieth century, Jane Eyre is my favorite to date, though I haven't read much. I adore Pride and Prejudice as much as the average girl but I feel like Jane Eyre is so much bigger and grander, I can't find an exact word for it.
I have been looking forward to this movie since I saw the gripping trailer last year. It appears to play on the gothic flavor of the novel, which is a good thing in my opinion. I haven't seen any of the earlier adaptations, but I bet only a small fraction if any were made in a dark tone such as this. It could also spark interest in those who haven't read the novel or do not fancy period movies.
Often, book to movie adaptations are horrible but I'm pretty positive Jane Eyre would be among the few exceptions (I trust RT). Below is one of the released clips from the movie, and as far as I can recall the book does not set up a kilig moment like this. Lovesit.
I'm not sure if I posted the trailer before, but I'm too lazy to check so I'll just post it. There are somespoilers extra clips here. Of course all official media can be found in the official website.

The casting choices are impeccable so I am even more excited to see this on the big screen. I'm still googling when it will be released in Philippine cinemas because I read that the March release is limited. :|
In other movie news, I just found out that the Swedish adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo will be coming soon here in the Philippines. Yay!

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.
Wow, what an epic.
I finally got to see Gone with the Wind last night and it was four hours of cinematic goodness. Even Bea liked it, which says a lot because she hardly likes any lengthy nor seriously dramatic movie. With the backdrop of the Civil War, this sets up as a good dramatic foundation even for the everyday scenes. While it is drama, it's also a big part rom-com in my opinion. Rhett Butler and Scarlet O'Hara's dialogues were always witty, if not sarcastic or comically exaggerated. Lovesit.
Somehow, it occurred to me that this may have been the basis for some of today's rom-coms. I mean, the sassy girl and rogue boy formula is well established. It makes for good cinema, or good laughs at least. In any case, throughout the endless theatricality, bickering and love between the two leads, it was exceedingly enjoyable.
It may be longer than any LOTR or Star Wars movie, but it's so good you wouldn't mind.

Just saw Jeux d'enfants. Feels like Amelie, but with strong hints of My Sassy Girl. I got curious when I read Kris' blog about it, then I realized it stars Marion Cotillard so I scoured for a download right away. Hehe
It's the kind of love story I like, really bittersweet. The kind where the protagonists are the major hindrance themselves. Hah.

I don't hate poetry.
But I also don't like it. Though somehow, I want to develop an appreciation of poems. So let's see how good my Eng 11 teacher is. Haha.
When I think of poetry, of course Shakespeare comes to mind. But beyond that, I also remember the movie In Her Shoes. I like the two poems featured in that movie, they were pretty good on their own but it is outstanding how it was incorporated in the film. After some googling, I found both pieces. :)
One Art by Elizabeth Bishop
The art of losing isn't hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster.
Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.
Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.
I lost my mother's watch. And look! my last, or
next-to-last, of three loved houses went.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.
I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster,
some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent.
I miss them, but it wasn't a disaster.
--Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture
I love) I shan't have lied. It's evident
the art of losing's not too hard to master
though it may look like (Write it!) like disaster. i carry your heart with me by ee cummingsi carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

Siomai Luck
Kuya Benj told me I was too hyper last Friday. I'm not sure if that observation was true, but my Friday was pretty good. I think the siomai incident is to blame.
I had only one class last Friday, because Sir Val had his passport matters to attend to and my P.I. 100 was suspended because of the IC fire. As expected, my English 11 was a little intense (si Ma'am kasi) but still interesting nonetheless. I like strong-willed teachers as much as easy going ones. After class, I was in the mood for a snack so I went to the stands on the high ground at the back of FC and went straight to the first stand. In the mornings, Jane and I go here for monay with palaman and in the afternoon most likely with BA for siomai or whatnots. I got four pieces of siomai, which turned out to be the last ones the store had. Tadah! It's mean and selfish but I was so elated by the succeeding events: people wanted siomai, while I was eating siomai near the stand, and there was none left. Gosh. Perfect timing Tricia.
So then I headed to the new building to wait for Kuya Benj, Mangs, and Master Alis. We were meeting Sison at SM North to see A-Team. It turned out that we were watching Karate Kid instead. I was initially disappointed because I really wanted to see A-Team, but Karate Kid definitely delivered. It was fun and Jayden Smith is an effective comic. Plus my A-Team hopes were not left in limbo, Tia treated us last night to a screening using her Citibank promo passes. Thanks Tia!

Point Taken
Ryan Bingham: You know why kids love athletes?
Bob: Because they screw lingerie models.
Ryan Bingham: No, that's why we love athletes. Kids love them because they follow their dreams.
I was surprised at how much I loved Up In The Air. I got the copy from Tino a couple of months or so ago, and I saw it just now because I was running out of things to do or watch. I knew the director was that of Juno, so I expected something witty and perhaps charming. But I did not expect that it would be as sharp and as impelling as I found it to be.
The movie revolves around Ryan Bingham who works for a company that specializes in firing people out of their jobs. There were numerous themes the movie got to feature, I like most those imparted by parts where there were clips of people's reactions during and after the process of being laid off. In any economy, it is difficult to be jobless and it is hard to have nothing to support yourself and or your family. At the same time, it is as challenging to be the one to bring the bad news. Quite creatively, they used it in the film as a means to get across some very true and sometimes overlooked points. One of these is exemplified by the dialogue above.
Maybe it's because I'm to graduate at the end of this coming academic year and I have no concrete plans yet, that I am struck by this dialogue most. (Yes, there are a number of equally good exchanges in the film.) It had me thinking, what is my dream? By dream I mean, what I want to do most in the world. That's easy, I want to travel. Not far from that is what career I want to pursue, i.e. what happens to me after receiving my diploma. That's the tricky part, because I am still unresolved. Yes I still have a year, but I want to prepare well for the path I will walk into. Either I decide soon or I learn to loosen up and not plan too much. Pwede both?
I want a career that I will enjoy, and who doesn't want that? But I must be realistic, and this will not be easy especially for the undecided me. All I know is this, I want to see the world. History and culture have fascinated me since I was a young girl, and to tour the world would be to learn all this first hand. Somehow, I know, I'll find a way to the see the pyramids.
